Having an active SSL certificate installed on your website is a must in 2018 and beyond. It allows your site to be accessed over HTTPS (VS the traditional “HTTP” connection). Why is this important? Because it means when your customers are sending their information to you (think contact forms, quote forms, email sign up forms, buying items from your website etc) all of their data is encrypted — so the bad guys can’t get ahold of it. If your website is still using the traditional HTTP, any hacker can obtain the information your customers are submitting over your website.
Do you need further reason to implement SSL/HTTPS on your website? Probably not 😉 but here’s another tidbit – Google has used it as a ranking signal since 2014. This will continue to grow in importance and so much so, Google started flagging/penalizing sites that don’t have it implemented as of late 2017.
